The most important recommendation I can give is that you should continue brushing and flossing daily.
A lot of women believe their teeth get weak during and after pregnancy. This is not necessarily true. There are a few things that can put stress on your teeth and gums. As a mother or 3, I know that our eating habits change; we eat different foods; we eat at unusual times. These changes do put extra stress on our teeth while pregnant. If you add gagging and vomiting to this list of stressors, there is a good your enamel can weaken a lot during pregnancy and cause tooth decay if you do not care for them properly.
To prevent vomit from damaging your enamel, do not brush your teeth after you throw up! Wait 20 minutes for the acid attack to subside then brush your teeth. If you brush your teeth right after throwing up, your enamel can weaken making you susceptible to tooth decay.
Other things to be aware of:
- If you previously had a lot of fillings (restorative work), you can get recurrent tooth decay easier.
- Pregnancy gingivitis may be linked to low birth weight, so keep brushing and flossing at any time of the day that works for you.
